I would say that it is false advertising. Ms. Fleming promised to address slow talkers and what could be done. However, she did not address it. At all. Nothing.I actually asked her why this was, via her website, and she IGNORED my question (3 weeks with no response; safe to say that she ignored the question).
Life changing! As a member of senior management I am always looking for ways to improve my leadership style. I believe I am taking a holistic approach by venturing out beyond just the typical leadership literature. I have read several books including Peter Drucker, Robert Green, Malcolm Gladwell, Dale Carnegie, John Maxwel, Kerry Patterson and others new and classical. Although the works of all these great authors continue to refine my perspective, two books had the greatest impact on my life. Dale Carnegies "How to win friends and influence people" and Dr. Carol Flemings "It's the way you say it". Not everything in this book was for me, I don't stutter, I already have good posture and I'm not shy, but what I thought didn't apply to me made me aware that it is an issue for other people and helped me develop a sense of compassion and understanding that makes me more aware in my interactions. In my quest for the latest in advanced leadership strategy and communication Dr. Flemings book shifted my focus to the fundamentals. With all the research and technology available it's easy to get away from attention to detail in basic human interaction. I have always believed that strong fundamentals are the basis for mastery in any skill. I highly recommend this book.
I am so lucky to come across this book. I used to be a person that stayed along in any kind of events; I didn’t know how to start conversation, and didn’t know what to expect from a smalltalk, which I didn’t even know was called “smalltalk.â€This book is full of concrete case studies on communication. I learned how to get the ball rolling on start, how to proceed with a bridge and get meaningful conversation going.This has changed my lifestyle too. I find I become outgoing. I am willing to talk to anyone whom I think he/she is willing to have a quick smalltalk at anywhere, and yes, of course, just like any smalltalk, with a reasonable expectation of the depth of topics.Strongly recommended.
Like someone else pointed out, it reads like a brochure. If that were the only problem, I wouldn't have given it a single star.. but I wish I had taken other honest reviews seriously (Perhaps this would have been useful for someone who is not a native English speaker, though.) The author uses case studies and anecdotes a bit too often, almost to try and legitimize and prove herself, rather than just laying out an efficient and useful procedure to become a better speaker/conversationalist/etc. To summarize the books strategy, you basicicaly record yourself and compare the melody of your voice to those of prominent individuals. Oh, and do this using your favorite poems. Why? Because so and so did it and after x y and z amount of weeks, there was a drastic improvement in his or her life. Person B did not do so, and I 'could not assure B's employer' to keep them employed. You get the idea.
As English as my second language. Carol explains the different situations that could be affecting you as a person in a simple way. Using real life experiences cases that makes the problem whatever it could be not an impossible one to resolve. She is clear from the beginning that it takes work. She doesn’t try to sell you something that is magical, but if you work hard Carol is providing you the tools to attain your goals.
Good information but the book was not what I expected. I was hoping for coaching on being more crisp when speaking in the corporate environment.
this book is perfect, I downloaded on my kindle and also purchase and hard copy for a friend in another country. I am expectually fond of chapter 4 and 5, I will re-read this book again.
Enjoyed the first few chapters but found it becoming repetitive as I read on.
